The Social Democrats want a higher taxation of capital and large fortunes and regulations on the alienation of profits, and the Social Democrats' proposals in this regard will be discussed with the Ministry of Finance in the coming weeks, the party's interim chairman, Sorin Grindeanu, said on Wednesday.

This issue was addressed in Wednesday's meeting of the ruling coalition

"There was another important component - the one related to the second package [of measures to be adopted by the Government] and the PSD proposals. We have things that we want to correct from package one, as I have already announced, those related to veterans, related to mothers, related to political prisoners, to give an example. But, we have proposals for the second package in the area of taxation, which we care about very much, and these suggestions will be submitted to the Ministry of Finance and we will also have discussions in the coming days, weeks with the Ministry of Finance in order to include these measures," Grindeanu said after a meeting of the ruling coalition.

He added that the measures in the fiscal area suggested by PSD are related to the over-taxation of capital and large fortunes, regulations on the alienation of profits in Romania.

According to Grindeanu, from the discussions he had with the finance minister, it resulted that a department of the ministry, which should have dealt with this, "was almost depopulated."

"The Social Democratic Party wants a higher taxation of capital and large fortunes in order to balance the tax burden, (...) which today is mostly placed on the poor and those on middle incomes and also the burden is placed on companies that pay their taxes on time unlike other companies," said Grindeanu.

According to the PSD leader, discussions also focused on the insolvency law, a raise in taxes on cryptocurrencies.

"Discussions in the coming days with the finance minister are extremely important. These are the broad lines that we said there. Of course, we also talked about the insolvency law, a raise in taxes on cryptocurrencies, so all kinds of things, but in detail we discussed them in the coalition and we want them to be included in the second package."

Grindeanu added that he would like the measures to correct the "injustices, abuses" in the first package to be included in the second package, along with provisions on the boards of directors and cuts in the emoluments to state-owned companies and special pensions, and to be adopted quickly by government pledging responsibility for them.

"Let's cut out all those things related to the boards of directors, emoluments, pensions, special pensions, all those things can be quickly approved and for this PSD agrees to take responsibility, but the others, related to fiscal measures, things related to what has been announced so far on healthcare, on administration, are things that, I believe should also pass through [parliamentary] debate."

According to the PSD leader, the government's pledge of responsibility is an instrument that must be used in exceptional situations. "One of the exceptional situations was two weeks ago when, pressured by ECOFIN, by the European Commission, the government had to make use of this exceptional instrument. I believe that it is an exceptional tool that must be used in this package of correction of social injustices," said Grindeanu. A
