Social Democratic Party (PSD) President Sorin Grindeanu said on Thursday that his party decided not to endorse any potential salary cuts and postponing some discussions in the governing coalition on this topic has nothing to do with the upcoming partial elections on 7 December.
Within a press statement delivered at the inauguration and opening of the Section 3 Pietroasele - Buzau of the Moldavia Motorway, Sorin Grindeanu underscored that the PSD does not endorse the potential salary cuts by 10 percent for certain public employees, a topic discussed recently at the Government level, agerpres reports.
"I can speak on behalf of the PSD. You know that last week, we had a meeting, a National Standing Bureau, where we unanimously decided not to endorse these cuts and they have nothing to do with the elections. These days, I have seen this interpretation suggesting that we are postponing these discussions until after 7 December. I can tell you that it has nothing to do one with one another. Even if elections do not take place on 7 December, the PSD does not agree with these cuts," Sorin Grindeanu mentioned.
Asked whether the PSD would leave the governing coalition if such a decision were taken, the Social Democrat leader said he hopes no such decision will be taken.
"I hope that those supporting these measures will come to their senses and give them up. I have seen some qualifications from other government colleagues. Let's wait. Our position is as firm as it can be, no salary cuts," the PSD leader added.
The PSD does not endorses the cut and reduction of salaries in the public sector, however, the party agrees with making the activity of the central administration efficient, PSD leader Grindeanu said on 19 November after a meeting of the party's National Standing Bureaus.
"Two days ago, the discussions in the coalition on the local administration were concluded regarding the 30 percent cuts, with a 20 percent threshold and the possibility, in 2026, to choose the reduction option rather than layoffs, that matter has been closed and everyone agrees. The discussion on central administration, however, remains open, where even the colleagues who yesterday rushed to publicly express their disagreement said that coalition talks should remain open, particularly on defence, public order and similar areas. Thus, to clarify, the discussions on central administration have not been closed within the coalition. Today, we held a National Political Bureau meeting and asked my colleagues for their opinion on this matter and requested a vote. The vote was unanimous: the PSD does not support salary cuts or reductions in the public sector," Sorin Grindeanu told a press conference held after the meeting of the National Standing Bureau of the party.
