The completion of the four railway tunnels between Racos and Homorod, and Racos and Ormenis respectively, of the Brasov - Sighisoara rail line is estimated for December 2026, builder Aktor announced on Thursday in a release.
"Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Ciprian Constantin Serban, and General Director of the National Railway Company CFR SA, Ion Simu-Alexandru, visited on October 15 the Homorod portal of Subsection 2, to inspect the progress of tunnel boring machines (TBMs) Alexandra and Konstantina, which are drilling the 5.1 km long northern tunnel pair between Racos and Homorod. Alongside them, another two 'moles', Eleni and Varvara, are boring twin 6.9 km tunnels between Racos and Ormenis. The largest TBMs existing in Romania have passed the threshold of 5,100 meters of drilled tunnel, the most advanced being TBM 1 (Eleni) with over 2,500 meters completed. With an average speed of approximately 10 meters per day, the completion of the four tunnels is estimated for December 2026," the release notes.
During the visit, the officials discussed with the project team the ongoing works, the next execution stages and the measures implemented to maintain the highest quality standards. Minister Ciprian Serban highlighted the strategic importance of this section, which will allow the completion of one of the most difficult segments of railway infrastructure in the country, and insisted on the need for permanent cooperation between the constructor, consultant and beneficiary to achieve all objectives.
