The World Trade Organization (WTO) reform and the European Union's trade relations with the US are the "burning issues" that the EU Council Presidency must deal with over the next six months, which also has as a priority the commercial capitalization on the Eastern Partnership, Minister for the Business, Trade and Entrepreneurship, Radu Stefan Oprea, said in Brussels on Wednesday.

"I have presented to the INTA Committee the priorities that Romania has in the field of international trade. And here we are talking about "Europe as a global actor" as the main pillar that we also commit to as priorities for foreign trade, we are talking about the modernization of the World Organization of Commerce - it is a subject that is extremely important because we believe in rule-based trade and the need to have a valid appeal body that can add value to international trade," the minister told a meeting with Romanian journalists after presenting the sectoral priorities of the Romanian Presidency of the EU Council in the European Parliament's Committee on International Trade (INTA).

He added that another important priority is the Multilateral Investment Court, stating that Romania supports "the idea and the need to have judges who are highly competent in this field".

Also, in the context of the ten years of Eastern Partnership, the minister said that "trade has to be stimulated in relation to countries that have already concluded comprehensive trade agreements such as the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine or Georgia" .

"Trade can be a measure of the value of this Eastern Partnership and it is on our agenda as a priority," said the Minister for the Business, Trade and Entrepreneurship.

Another very important topic of discussion is also the relationship between Europe and Britain, "another element where we do not have all the answers today."

Concerning the difficult trade issues that Romania will manage, the minister mentioned the EU-US trade relationship and the WTO reform.

He said he met Tuesday with European Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom to discuss the issue.

"I invited General Director of the WTO, Roberto Azevedo, to Bucharest. Also, the President of the INTA Committee, Mr Bernd Lange, is invited to take part in the informal dinner that we will have in Bucharest, because I believe the involvement of all the actors, the EP, the Commission, the Council, is the only way to be able to progress very quickly in the burning topics that we have today and which are the WTO reform and the relations, the negotiations between the US and the EU," Radu Stefan Oprea said.
