Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca said on Wednesday that a railway segment linking the city of Galati to the port of Constanta will be completed in about three months, providing a simpler route for goods from Ukraine.

"We will continue to identify together ways in which we can facilitate the transport of goods, especially the shipments of cereals and agri-food products that Ukraine either exports to Romania or to other trading partners, and in that respect the Ministry of Transport has already decided that we can extend that railway segment from Galati to the port; it is a segment of about five kilometres that can be completed in about three months. That way, we facilitate the arrival of freight trains directly to the Port of Constanta, thus shortening the time required for transport from the border (...) where track gauge is different," Ciuca told a news conference.

He added that in the Port of Constanta more than 300 rail cars were displaced that had been parked for about 30 years in order to make room for maneuvering, Agerpres.ro informs.

"The port of Constanta has acquired a special relevance at this moment and we would not want to forget the port of Galati, because the port on the Danube also has the capacity to ensure a very consistent transit of goods," Ciuca said.

He added that "the Danube is regaining its strategic relevance in terms of inland transport of goods".
