Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan sent a message of condolences to the family of Mircea Lucescu, emphasizing that future generations will know him as the legendary coach whose name is linked to the best years of Romanian football.
"Mircea Lucescu meant football, with a capital 'F', for at least three generations. The luckiest saw him playing for Dinamo Bucharest in the 60s and 70s. They saw him in the role of captain of the national team in the 1970 World Cup matches. Others were barely born when he started coaching. Even the youngest know him as the legendary coach of Shakhtar Donetsk, Galatasaray or Besiktas. Future generations will know him as the legendary coach whose name is linked to the best years of Romanian football," Ilie Bolojan wrote on Tuesday evening in a post on the Government's Facebook account.
He highlighted the extraordinary moments that Mircea Lucescu gave us as a football player or coach.
"Thank you, Mircea Lucescu, for the extraordinary moments you gave us, on the field or on the bench! May God forgive him! Condolences to the bereaved family," Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan also said.
Mircea Lucescu died on Tuesday at the Bucharest University Emergency Hospital. He was 80 years old.
