Retail trade turnover up 2.1pct as gross series, eight months into 2025 (statistics)

The volume of retail trade turnover (excluding motor vehicles and motorcycles) increased in the first eight months of this year compared to the same period in 2024, both as a gross series by 2.1%, and as a seasonally and calendar-adjusted series by 2.7%, according to data the National Institute of Statistics (INS) published on Monday.

According to the INS, the gross retail turnover volume (excluding motor vehicles and motorcycles) recorded an overall increase of 2.1% during the mentioned period, driven by rises in sales of non-food products (+4.6%) and retail sales of automotive fuels in specialist stores (+2.9%). Sales of food, beverages and tobacco declined 1.4%, according to Agerpres.

The calendar and seasonally adjusted retail turnover volume (excluding motor vehicles and motorcycles), for the period 1 January - 31 August 2025 compared to 1 January - 31 August 2024, rose overall 2.7%, supported by an increase in sales of non-food products (+5.8%) and in the retail trade of automotive fuels in dedicated stores (+2.8%). Sales of food, beverages and tobacco fell 0.7%.

According to the INS, the gross retail turnover volume (excluding motor vehicles and motorcycles) in August 2025 compared to the previous month dropped overall by 7.2%, due to declines in the retail trade of automotive fuels in dedicated stores (-11.7%), sales of non-food products (-8.0%), and sales of food, beverages and tobacco (-3.3%).

The seasonally and calendar-adjusted retail turnover volume decreased overall in August 2025 compared to the previous month by 4%, as a result of decreases in food, beverages, and tobacco sales (-3.4%), non-food product sales (-3.1%), and the retail trade of automotive fuels in dedicated stores (-2.9%).

Furthermore, the gross retail turnover volume (excluding motor vehicles and motorcycles) in August 2025 compared to August 2024 recorded an overall decline of 4%, due to reductions in food, beverages, and tobacco sales (-6%), non-food product sales (-3.2%), and retail trade of automotive fuels in dedicated stores (-2.3%).

On an annual basis, the seasonally and calendar-adjusted retail turnover volume (excluding motor vehicles and motorcycles) registered an overall decrease of 2.1%, resulting from declines in food, beverages, and tobacco sales (-4.4%) and non-food product sales (-0.4%). However, the retail trade of automotive fuels in dedicated stores rose 5.9%.
