The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, begins a two-day visit to Romania on Wednesday.

She will have an informal meeting with the President-elect, Nicusor Dan, on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the official program announced on the website of the European Parliament Multimedia Center, Metsola will be in Timisoara on Thursday, at the invitation of Mayor Dominic Fritz, to receive the Timisoara Prize for European Values.

"I am looking forward to traveling to Romania at such an important time for the country. I am proud to accept the Timisoara Prize for European Values on behalf of the European Parliament. It is a tribute not only to our common European values, but also to our daily struggle to protect them. In times of uncertainty, Europe remains a beacon of hope, dignity and democracy. The spirit of Timisoara embodies these values, reminding us that freedom is never a given, it is earned and must be defended. Romania's commitment to the European project continues to inspire us all", said Roberta Metsola, ahead of the visit.

During their visit to Timisoara, Roberta Metsola and Dominic Fritz will have a dialogue with 800 pupils and students from Timisoara and from the area about Europe and current challenges, which will take place at the Banat Philharmonic.

The Timisoara Prize for European Values, now in its second edition, is awarded to international personalities who actively support the fundamental values of Europe.

This year's laureate was chosen by a jury made up of prominent figures from the Romanian cultural, diplomatic and legal scene: Iulia Motoc (The Hague), judge of the International Criminal Court, Cristian Macelaru (Cologne), musical director of the National Orchestra of France, Simona Miculescu (Paris), ambassador, president of the UNESCO General Conference, Anca Miruna Lazarescu (Munich), director and screenwriter, Adriana Babeti (Timisoara), writer and literary critic, Dominic Fritz, mayor of Timisoara.

Roberta Metsola was appreciated for "her firm leadership in times of crisis, her unconditional support for Ukraine and Moldova and her continuous efforts for Romania's accession to the Schengen area".

The Timisoara Prize for European Values is also accompanied by a cash prize of 30,000 euros. This year, at the request of President Metsola, the prize money will not be collected, and will be reallocated for the 2026 edition.
