The Government okayed on Thursday a draft law for Romania's accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC).
According to a Government's press release, following the assessment by ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), Romania received, on April 15, 2025, the support of the member states regarding its intention to join.
"By joining, Romania expresses its commitment to contribute to maintaining peace, preventing conflicts and strengthening security in Southeast Asia, while creating new opportunities for dialogue and political and economic collaboration with ASEAN states, without incurring additional costs related to membership," the press release reads.
As additional information, the Government specifies that the TAC, initially signed in 1976 by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand and later extended to other states and regional organizations, promotes peace, friendship and cooperation through principles such as respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-interference in internal affairs, peaceful settlement of disputes, renunciation of threats or force and the development of economic, commercial, social, technical and scientific cooperation.
Currently, the treaty has 55 party states, along with the European Union. Among these are countries from outside the ASEAN region, such as France, Germany, the Netherlands, Greece, Denmark and Luxembourg, and other European states, such as Finland, Poland, Spain and Hungary, are in the process of accession.
