Romania participated, between February 11-14, in the 18th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Promotion and Protection of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions of the UNESCO 2005 Convention, in Paris, as a member of the committee of this body, with a mandate for the period 2023-2027.
Active participation in this meeting was ensured by the team of the Standing Delegation of Romania to UNESCO, under the coordination of Simona-Mirela Miculescu, Ambassador and President of the UNESCO General Conference, together with the technical representative of the Ministry of Culture, Cristina Cotenescu, expert in sustainable development, the ministry informed on Friday in a post on its Facebook account.
In her intervention during the committee's proceedings, the representative of the Ministry of Culture mentioned several of the initiatives implemented or launched during 2024, aligned with the committee's action priorities, as well as the guiding principles of the convention:
* the investments carried out by the Ministry of Culture, through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, namely investment I7 "Accelerating the digital transition of film production and distribution" and investment I6 "Developing an electronic system for granting funding in culture";
* the state aid scheme for supporting the production of audiovisual works on the territory of Romania, carried out through the Film and Cultural Investment Office, which contributes to the development of European and international cinematographic cooperation, supports local film production and professional training in the field, creating new jobs in the creative and related industries;
* the collaboration protocol on cultural education, signed between the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Education, which is based on the UNESCO Framework for Cultural and Artistic Education.
Equally mentioned were the steps already taken by the Ministry of Culture to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the 2005 UNESCO Convention, the active participation in the UNESCO regional consultation for the organization of the MONDIACULT 2025 conference, as well as the transmission of the quadrennial report on the implementation of the 2005 UNESCO Convention in Romania.
The agenda of the 18th session of the Committee includes topics such as: the annual report on the Secretariat's activity and the implementation of the decisions adopted at the previous session; the status of the periodic reports of the States on the implementation of the 2005 Convention; the projects financed by the International Fund for Cultural Diversity; the evaluation of the recommendations of the two reflection groups - established during the previous session of the Committee - on the diversity of cultural expressions in the digital environment, respectively the implementation of Article 16 of the Convention, which refers to ensuring preferential treatment for developing states.
