Romania, as a border country of the European Union, bears the primary responsibility of preventing illegal border crossings, a duty it has fulfilled over the years, said on Thursday Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan.
"As far as combating illegal migration is concerned, Romania, as an EU border country, has the main responsibility of preventing illegal border crossings, something we have successfully done all these years,' Bolojan said at a joint press conference with Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker, in response to a question on the matter.
He added that the number of illegal migrants crossing EU borders from the south-east has fallen significantly in recent years.
"I would also like to commend the collaboration between our ministries, as reflected in statistics showing that the number of illegal crossings into the EU via the south-east has decreased markedly. Romania will continue to take this responsibility seriously in the period ahead," the prime minister said.
Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, on an official visit to Austria, held a meeting on Thursday at the Federal Chancellery on Ballhausplatz with his counterpart Christian Stocker.
