Romania, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine signed on Thursday, in Chisinau, the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation for the development and promotion of the joint nomination file of the Precucuteni - Ariusd - Cucuteni - Trypillia Cultural Complex for inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List, which is a vast system of settlements, dwellings, sanctuaries and artifacts dated between 5,050-3,200 BC.

According to the Ministry of Culture, this memorandum establishes the official framework for collaboration between the three states, constituting "a decisive step for the protection and capitalizing on a cultural heritage of universal importance".

The document was signed during the International Conference "The Outstanding Universal Value of the Precucuteni - Ariusd - Cucuteni - Trypillia Cultural Complex", an event organized on September 18-19 at the National Museum of History of Moldova in Chisinau.

"Today, in Chisinau, in the presence of the Ministers of Culture of Romania and the Republic of Moldova and the representative of Ukraine, the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation for the development and promotion of the joint nomination file of the Precucuteni-Ariusd-Cucuteni-Trypillia Cultural Complex for inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List was signed," the ministry announced.

The opening of the conference was addressed by Simona Mirela Miculescu (online), Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Permanent Delegate of Romania to UNESCO and President of the 42nd Session of the UNESCO General Conference, Andras Demeter, Romanian Minister of Culture, Sergiu Prodan, Minister of Culture in the Republic of Moldova, and Tetiana Berezhna, Acting Minister of Culture and Strategic Communications in Ukraine.

Andras Demeter emphasized the historical importance of the moment.

"The Cucuteni-Tripolie culture represents one of the most significant manifestations of ancient European civilization, and the fact that, in these complicated times, we have come together to lay the foundations for a collaboration to promote, protect and enhance this important heritage shared by the three peoples speaks of the essential role of cultural heritage in affirming our identity and belonging, which we commit ourselves, from now on, to protect together," said Andras Demeter.

The first day's program included scientific communication sessions, lectures dedicated to the exceptional universal value of the Cucuteni-Trypillia civilization, as well as the opening of the exhibition of photographs and documentary images "The Precucuteni-Ariusd-Cucuteni-Trypillia Communities on the Territory of the Republic of Moldova".

Scientific, legal and technical aspects of the joint nomination process will be analyzed on Friday, through thematic sessions and debates on the authenticity, integrity of the sites and the methodology of collaboration.

The conference will conclude with the establishment of the work calendar and the necessary steps for preparing the submission of the transnational file to UNESCO.

The initiative to register the Precucuteni-Ariusd-Cucuteni-Trypillia Cultural Complex on the UNESCO World Heritage List was launched in 2017, at the proposal of the National Museum of Bucovina in Suceava, with the support of several museums and specialized institutions from Romania and Ukraine.

The complex represents a vast system of settlements, dwellings, sanctuaries and artifacts dated between 5,050-3,200 BC, located on the territory of Romania, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. It is considered one of the most advanced and extensive prehistoric cultures in Europe, with a high level of social, technological and artistic organization. Due to these characteristics, the Complex has the potential to be recognized as an exceptional universal value, worthy of the protection and visibility that its inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List confers.
