Romania needs more higher education graduates because the sustainable economic development and the society our country aspires to can only become a reality through the contribution of as many as possible "well-prepared and competitive citizens who put their creativity to work", President Klaus Iohannis declared on Tuesday at the opening of the academic year at the National University of Music in Bucharest, informs Agerpres.
"Starting with the introduction of programs to increase access to higher education, such as 'First Student' or 'Second Chance', to increasing the scholarship fund, all these measures pursued the same goal: reducing the gap to the EU average by increasing the number of students. Romania needs more higher education graduates, because the sustainable economic development and the society we aspire to can only become a reality through the contribution of as many as possible well-prepared and competitive citizens, who put their creativity to work," the head of the state said.
Iohannis encouraged the students to dare and choose to participate in international learning experiences, such as the Erasmus Program, as well as in extracurricular activities to complement their formal qualification.
The president also had a message for the academics: "The prestige of Romanian higher education depends, to a large extent, on your mobilization and involvement, which means not only your teaching role, but also research projects, intense publishing activity, student mentorship and guidance."
According to Iohannis, over time, the National University of Music in Bucharest has gone through numerous changes, but has remained faithful to its mission of training and educating young music enthusiasts. The head of the state also mentioned the soon-to-be 160th anniversary of the establishment of the Music Conservatory, which has always been "a center of innovation and creativity, a genuine hub of resistance through culture, even in the darkest periods of our history."
