PSD MP Mihai Fifor declared that as of Friday Romania officially enters the "Bolojan Sign" - "a harsh and unfair fiscal stage", in which the payment bill is currently placed only on the shoulders of those who work fairly and honestly, pay taxes and hope for a better life.

"As of today, Romania officially enters the 'Bolojan Sign' - a harsh and unfair fiscal stage, in which the bill is placed for now only on the shoulders of those who work fairly and honestly in this country, pay taxes and hope for a better life. In the name of the crusade to reduce the budget deficit, the Government has chosen the easiest and at the same time the most unfair path: higher VAT, falling incomes, collapsed purchasing power, huge pressure on the middle class and vulnerable Romanians. Nothing yet about cutting sinecures, eliminating privileges or combating tax evasion. Nothing yet about stimulating the economy or supporting Romanian companies. Today it is only about squeezing even more from those who already pay," Fifor wrote on Facebook.

He added that honest Romanians are paying today "the price for the lack of courage" to take the measures that should have been taken from the beginning "and for which the PSD fought from the beginning - "correcting fiscal aberrations, such as health contributions on the allowances of mothers, veterans or former political prisoners, overtaxing corporations with huge profits and blocking the outsourcing of profits, eliminating sinecures and special pensions, as proof of real equity, supporting the economy and public investments, instead of punitive policies, holding the big tax evaders accountable, not taxing mothers, pensioners and employees".

"Social justice seems to be dying today in Romania. Not just because taxes have increased. But because the real causes of the deficit are still being circumvented. The privileged remain undisturbed. Those who have been stealing from the state for years are still being avoided. Those who keep Romania on its feet are being brought on their knees. PSD does not condone these injustices. We are in government to make a difference, not to passively assist. To correct imbalances, to shorten this difficult period, to impose real fiscal equity measures. I have said clearly and we repeat: progressive income taxation is a fair, sustainable solution, applied in most developed countries and recommended to Romania by the European Commission. We cannot continue with austerity for the many and protection for the few," Fifor said.

Mihai Fifor mentions that it was Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan's choice to promote "a tough option, which disproportionately affects the low- and middle-income population."

"PSD made it clear that it does not support all the measures in the fiscal package, but it could not block a plan imposed under the pressure of maintaining the country's rating and macroeconomic stability. Romania needs reform. But not a blind and unfair one. Not one that crushes exactly what is still functioning correctly in this country. PSD is and will remain the voice of balance, reason and responsibility. We are in government because only in this way can we fight for fairness, for the protection of honest Romanians and for the reconstruction of a fair, solid and sustainable economy," the social democrat concludes.
