Romania is participating for the first time with eDNA and subterranean fauna samples in the international campaign Joint Danube Survey 5, announced Apele Romane [Romanian Waters] Co. on Friday, in a Facebook post.

According to the cited source, the national team of the Joint Danube Survey 5 (JDS5) campaign completed the sampling of groundwater on Friday, marking an important stage in the largest monitoring action of the Danube River at European level. The activity is coordinated by the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River - ICPDR.

"For the first time in Romania, in addition to classic water samples, samples of underground fauna, sediment and environmental DNA (eDNA) were collected, in order to obtain a more complete picture of the biodiversity and quality of groundwater. The sampling was carried out by Florentina Soare (national team coordinator JDS5) and Mariana Olteanu (chemist, Laboratory Analysis and Coordination Service - Apele Romane at national level), with the support of colleagues from the Giurgiu Water Quality Laboratory and the Giurgiu Hydrotechnical System from Apele Romane Arges-Vedea. A remarkable fact: this scientific field work is, for the most part, completed by dedicated specialists, women who coordinate and implement key stages of the campaign. Yesterday, the whole world marked World Water Monitoring Day - a symbol of global efforts to understand and protect this vital resource. Fieldwork continues in Romania, so that the data collected can help us protect the visible and invisible waters on which we all depend," the post says.

Apele Romane notes that the Joint Danube Survey, now in its 5th edition, is the largest international campaign to monitor the Danube, carried out once every 6 years, with the participation of all riparian states.
