Romania is taking part these days in the 77th edition of the Frankfurt Book Fair 2025, the world's most important publishing event, which annually gathers more than 250,000 visitors and professionals from over 100 countries.
Minister of Culture Andras Demeter attended the official opening of Romania's stand, where he met with publishers, authors and representatives of partner institutions to discuss the promotion of Romanian literature and editorial cooperation within the European space.
"Romania's presence in Frankfurt confirms the place of our literature in the European cultural dialogue a dialogue that is mature, open and vibrant. Books remain an essential means of knowledge and connection between people, through which Romanian values and voices can be heard across the world. Our aim this year is to secure the status of Guest of Honour Country at the 2028 edition. After two decades of experience with both national and international book fairs, I can say this is the best opportunity yet. It calls for a thorough rethinking of our partnerships and a genuine public-private collaboration for the benefit of the book industry, the art of translation and all the creative fields that grow from literature," said Andras Demeter, according to the Ministry of Culture.
He also attended the opening of the Philippines Pavilion, Guest of Honour country at this year's edition, as an opportunity for cultural dialogue and the exchange of best practices in the creative industries.
The informal event "Happy Hour at Romania's Stand", organised by the Ministry of Culture in partnership with the Romanian Publishers Association, marked the opening of Romania's events at the fair, which began on Wednesday and runs until 19 October.
Andras Demeter also held a series of bilateral meetings with key figures from the publishing and institutional sectors, including Wolfram Weimer, Commissioner for Culture and Media of the German Federal Government, for discussions on cultural cooperation and the promotion of shared European values; Astrid Bohmisch, Director of the Leipzig Book Fair, to discuss Romania's participation in the next edition; Christina Beinhoff, Director-General in the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Directorate for Culture and Society, on bilateral cultural cooperation; and Angelika Salvisberg, Project Manager of the TRADUKI network, a European platform supporting translation and author mobility.
The minister of culture also met with representatives of the Frankfurt Book Fair.
Romania's participation is coordinated by the Ministry of Culture in cooperation with the Romanian Publishers Association, TRADUKI, the Romanian Cultural Institute, and the Diaspora Reads Association, showcasing contemporary literature and the spirit of cultural collaboration that brings together publishers, translators and authors from across the region.
Covering a surface of 80 square metres, the national stand offers a rich programme of public readings, literary talks and round tables featuring authors and publishers from Central and Eastern Europe, providing an open space for meetings, exchanges and new collaborations.
The Ministry's guests this year include writers Mariana Gorczyca, Iulian Fruntasu and Pavlo Matyusha, cultural manager Antje Contius, and translators Jan Cornelius and Georg Aescht, who will moderate and take part in several of the scheduled events.
The programme also features special events, including a round table dedicated to publishers from Ukraine and neighbouring countries, hosted at Romania's stand.
Throughout the fair, POP Publishing House will host readings and book presentations featuring prominent Romanian authors such as Ana Blandiana, Dinu Flamand, Eginald Schlattner, Robert Serban and Nicolae Tzone.
For the 2025 edition, Romania's stand will introduce a new graphic concept, inspired by the acclaimed design of previous years, with contemporary visual elements and a dedicated professional meeting area.
