Romania was ranked by Airports Council International - Europe among the fastest-growing European countries in air traffic for September, the Bucharest National Airports Corporation (CNAB) reports on Thursday in a release.

According to the ACI-Europe ranking, Romanian airports saw an 11.1% increase in passenger air traffic in September 2025 compared to the same month in 2024, placing Romania fourth after Slovakia, Poland and Slovenia.

In the latest ACI Europe ranking, Bucharest Baneasa International Airport placed third among European airports handling under one million passengers annually, recording a remarkable 136.7% increase in air traffic. It was preceded by Antwerp (Belgium) and Hatay (Turkey).

In the category of large airports with 10 to 25 million passengers per year, Bucharest Henri Coanda International Airport outperformed the European average increase of 4.6%, registering an 11.3% rise in passenger traffic in September 2025 compared to the same month in 2024.

In the first nine months of 2025, the Bucharest National Airports Corporation recorded an air traffic of 13,281,705 passengers and 106,840 aircraft movements (landings and take-offs). Of this total, Henri Coanda Airport recorded 12,902,632 passengers and 95,944 aircraft landings and takeoffs, and Baneasa Airport - 379,073 passengers and 10,896 landings and takeoffs.

The number of passengers who passed through the Bucharest airports in the first nine months of this year was 9.23% higher than in the same period of 2024, setting the stage for the annual threshold of 17 million passengers to be reached.

"The evolution of the number of passengers in Romania significantly exceeds the general European trend, which highlights the dynamism of the country's airports and the interest of Romanians in air transport. Aviation no longer represents just a means of transport, but a catalyst for economic development and a bridge between cultures. Romania's airports must not remain just departure and arrival points. They can become, through investments in modernization and expansion, drivers of economic and social transformation, symbols of a modern, open and competitive country," said the president of the Romanian Airports Association, Bogdan Mindrescu, who is also general director of CNAB, as cited in the release.
