The National Institute of Public Health on Monday said that between the beginning of the reporting period, June 2 and August 21, eight cases of West Nile virus infection (seven confirmed cases and one probable case) were reported in Romania.

The cases were recorded in Bucharest (3), the counties of Dolj (1), Galati (1), Prahova (1), Vrancea (1) and Salaj (1), said Agerpres.

The most cases, four, were reported in the 70-79 age group, followed by two cases in the 60-69 age group and one each from the over-80 and 10-19 age groups.

In this context the INSP specialists issued several recommendations to the public:

* avoid exposure to mosquitoes by wearing long-sleeved clothing and long pants;

* using mosquito-repellant chemicals;

* prevent mosquito from entering the house (through protective nets on windows);

* ensure draining any ponds around households;

* remove stale water containers and household garbage.
