Romania needs to reposition itself on the map of mineral resources and become a pole of competitiveness through these resources, said Economy Minister Florin Spataru at a first working meeting held at the Ministry of Economy on Wednesday, bringing to the same table all those who can contribute to the upgrading of the Strategy for Non-Energy Minerals 2035, informs a press release sent to AGERPRES.
Also attending the meeting were Secretary of State Mihai-Ion Macaveiu and representatives of the Mineral Resources Directorate, as well as members of the Romanian Academy, the National Agency for Mineral Resources, the Faculty of Geology and Geophysics, Patromin (Mining Employers' Association of Romania), Patromat (Employers' Federation of Construction Materials Industry of Romania), Cepromin Deva, Remin SA Baia Mare, Conversmin, Salrom, National Mineral Water Company, Apemin SA, CNCAF Minvest Deva.
According to the quoted source, the principles that will underpin this strategy's design are the economic interest of Romania and the development of a value chain in the mining industry, Agerpres.ro informs.
"It is especially important to have well-established guidelines that are updated to the needs of the market and, at the same time, to the needs of critical materials that are becoming indispensable in today's industries. The priorities established at the time of writing the document no longer correspond to the current situation, when several crises overlap, and Romania's geopolitical position has an essential contribution in the future negotiation processes at the European decision-making table," said Florin Spataru.
The mining industry is a global industry and needs to be addressed accordingly.
"The demand for mining products for the non-energy sector is growing both at EU and global level. The competitiveness of the industry cannot be ensured without an integrated approach of industrial policies with a policy of ensuring solid mineral resources. As soon as the strategy is completed and the objectives set, Romania will be able to become a development hub in the field of non-energy minerals, but also in the field of rare raw materials," reads the release.
At the same time, the Ministry of Economy has restarted the National Geological Program, aimed at identifying the non-energy mineral resources available in all areas of the country, thus establishing the competitive areas in each region.
