Romania submits to ILO document for ratification of Convention on Elimination of Violence and Harassment at Workplace

The Minister of Labour, Simona Bucura-Oprescu, submitted to the International Labor Organization (ILO) the ratification document by Romania of the Convention on the Elimination of Violence and Harassment at the Workplace, informs the Labour and Social Solidarity Ministry (MMSS) in a post posted on Wednesday on its official Facebook account.

"The Minister of Labor and Social Solidarity, Simona Bucura Oprescu, is participating these days in the 112th Session of the International Labor Conference that is taking place in Geneva, Switzerland. Today, the Minister Simona Bucura-Oprescu submitted the instrument of ratification by Romania of Convention No. 190/2019 concerning the elimination of violence and harassment in the world of work. The document was submitted in the framework of the bilateral meeting with Gilbert F. Houngbo, the Director General of the International Labor Organization. Oprescu said that Romania has so far ratified 8 of the 10 ILO Fundamental Conventions assimilated to human rights. In total, Romania has ratified 38 of the 57 ILO Conventions and will continue to take all the necessary steps to ratify the last two ILO Fundamental Conventions on health and safety at work," notes the cited source.

Also, the Romanian minister of Labor participated in a bilateral meeting with Beate Andrees, regional director of the ILO for Europe and Central Asia, and the discussions focused on strengthening the cooperation between Romania and the International Labor Office. In this context, Bucura-Oprescu expressed wish for the Organization to open an Office in Bucharest.

"MMSS and the Government of Romania respect their commitment to ensure equal opportunities and access to essential public services for all citizens, but also the development of policies that ensure the green and digital transition that contributes to a solid economy and the creation of new jobs. We will continue to strive for a safe and inclusive work environment, without discrimination and harassment. We will collaborate with social partners to achieve these goals. MMSS and the Government of Romania will continue to cooperate with the ILO to respect standards, policies and good practices in the field of work as an effective response to the current challenges generated by the unprecedented changes in the world of work," stated the head of MMSS.

At the same time, in her intervention in the plenary of the conference, Bucura-Oprescu emphasized Romania's commitment to combating violence and harassment at the workplace, as well as to social dialogue, stimulating the employment of the workforce, ensuring safety and health at work, equality and non-discrimination.

The Romanian official addressed the invitation to the general director of the IOM, Gilbert F. Houngbo, to pay an official visit to Romania in the next period.
