* TIMISOARA

More than five hundred protesters demonstrated on Sunday evening in the Opera Square in Timisoara, discontent with OUG 7/2019 on the justice system.

One of the speakers proposed to block the access of Justice Minister Tudorel Toader to the headquarters of the West University of Timisoara (UVT), where the review of the Timisoara Court of Appeal will be held on Monday, should he come.

"What has been happening in recent months and in recent years is a trampling of all the ideals of the Revolution of December 1989. Let us prevent him [Justice Minister Tudorel Toader, ed.n.] from entering the WTT. We will be there with our colleagues and our students to block his entry. I don't believe he will have the courage to come (at the review of the Court of Appeal, ed.n.). He will not dare come to Timisoara. I am launching this challenge. Let us stay mobilised the entire year, let us talk to the people we know are confused, those who watch Antena 3 [private TV broadcaster, supporter of the ruling coalition, ed.n.]," said prof. Vasile Popovici, former Ambassador of Romania to Morocco and Portugal.

The protesters had vuvuzelas and banners displaying the messages "No criminals in public positions!" and they chanted "PSD, the red plague!", "Repeal and Leave!", "Down with the communists!", "United, we save all Romania!", "Do not fool the people with the TV!", "Antena 3, some punks!," "We do not want to be ruled by thieves!", "CCR, PSD servant!" Constitutional Court of Romania), "Honor to the magistrates!", "May DNA [National Anticorruption Directorate, ed.n.] come to take you!."

The speakers have drawn attention to the fact that the next period will be essential in the fight against PSD, and when they feel that they are losing their hope they should think about the pre-1989 era. "Do not forget the 1980s, they can come back anytime, with cold, darkness and fear!," the protesters said.

Those present in the square have called for the resignations of Liviu Dragnea, Calin Popescu Tariceanu and Tudorel Toader, and conveyed to Kelemen Hunor (national leader of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania, ed.n.) "UDMR, the Hungarian PSD!."

"The new OUG puts an end to independent justice. Granting unjustified rights to the new 'SS' will generate absolute control over magistrates. Corrupt politicians will get control over the power buttons that will keep them from the hands of justice, and through which they will be able to take revenge on political opponents. Authoritarianism is slowly moving in, in the indifference of a majority of our fellow citizens," was the message sent by the organizers of the protest, Timisoara Initiative.
