Romania will be attending the 83rd edition of the Madrid Book Fair with a national stand and 20 literary events, between May 31 and June 16.
Queen Letizia of Spain will inaugurate the Feria del Libro de Madrid 2024, where 359 exhibitors will display their editorial offers and three million visitors are expected to attend, with more than 300 events for readers of all ages and 5,000 autograph shows.
Romania's presence, its thirteenth, is organised by the Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR), through the National Book Centre and ICR Madrid, with support from Romania's Ministry of Culture and the Embassy of Romania in Spain.
Among the protagonists of the events are Gabriela Adamesteanu, Eugen Barz, Aura Christi, Nichita Danilov, Cristian Fulas, Miguel Gane, Stejarel Olaru, Radu Paraschivescu, Radmila Popovici, Andreea Rasuceanu and Corina Sabau.
A special event, "Homage to Norman Manea. Always at home in Romanian" is scheduled for June 6, where special guests are Mercedes Monmany, Gabriela Adamesteanu and Marian Ochoa de Eribe. Moderating the event will be Esther Bendahan.
Romania's motto is "Letras rumanas: un passe al lector" (Romanian literature: the ball is in the reader's court), in consonance with the motto of the Fair - "Entrena tu mente, lee tu cuerpo" (Train your mind, read your body).
On display at Romania's stand will be books by Romanian authors translated into Spanish in recent years, many of them published with ICR support of under programmes run by the National Book Center, as well as a diverse selection of books in Romanian.
