Romania voices agreement in principle to take over five migrants recently stranded on Malta's coasts

MAE

Romania has voiced its availability in principle, alongside other member states, to take over five migrants from those that have recently stranded on the coasts of Malta, the gesture being "a particular one, of solidarity," informs a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) sent to AGERPRES on Tuesday.

"This offer will materialise later on, within the current legislative framework and the Dublin Regulation, which refers to the management of such situations that are of a profound humanitarian nature," the cited source shows.

The decision represents "a particular gesture of solidarity that Romania has decided to convey, including with the aim of offering, from the perspective of the Presidency of the Council of the EU, a positive signal to encourage the other Member States to follow similar conduct, given the extremely delicate humanitarian situation of the 49 migrants," MAE adds.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Permanent Representation of Romania to the European Union have been permanently in touch with the European institutions with duties in the field and with the other EU Member States, the press release states.

In fact, MAE further points out, in the context of EU migration talks, Romania has consistently supported the importance of joint action on the basis of the principles of solidarity and accountability and ensuring a fair balance between them. Romania continues to support this approach also from the perspective of the Presidency of the EU Council.
