Romania has won the international competition for a judge role at the UN Dispute Tribunal (UNDT), with Adina Elvira Ghita following to take up the office for a 7-year term starting in July 2026.

''Romania has won, with 109 votes in the UN General Assembly, the international competition for a judge position at the UN Dispute Tribunal (UNDT), following a rigorous process carried out in two stages - a technical one, followed by several rounds of voting. The winner is Judge Adina Elvira Ghita, a professional with more than 17 years of experience, who will take up the office for a 7-year term starting July 2026," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) informs in a press release.

This victory, which is the result of a campaign coordinated by the MAE and the assessments carried out by the UN Internal Justice Council, confirms Romania's reputation in the UN system and continues the series of diplomatic successes following the elections of Romanian judges to the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court, the MAE states.

"Romania has exemplary professionals who, through their work, manage to increase our respect and influence. Our human capital, at home and in the world, is the most important capital we have. The candidates also went through three rigorous stages organised by the United Nations Internal Justice System. The victory in New York of Judge Adina Elvira Ghita and Romanian diplomacy is built over time and Romanian professionals can see not only that the state does not want to hinder them, but we are working to be their allies and to open doors for them, as they and Romania deserve," states Minister Oana Toiu.

"The procedure for appointing a judge to one of the two UN tribunals - UNDT and United Nations Appeals Tribunal (UNAT) - is extremely rigorous and complex. For those who are not familiar with the voting mechanisms in the United Nations General Assembly, it is difficult to understand the extraordinary effort on which such a result is based, a team effort of particular intensity in the period preceding the vote. I am fully grateful for the excellent collaboration and the special support from which I benefited and I hope to bring, through my activity, an honorable contribution to my country," said Adina Elvira Ghita, according to the press release.
