A C-27 J Spartan aircraft, configured for firefighting, and a C-130 Hercules aircraft, for logistic support, from the Romanian Air Force have been in action since Wednesday in support of the intervention forces of the Republic of North Macedonia to extinguish wildfires.
According to a press release from the National Defence Ministry (MApN), the aircraft took off from Otopeni Air Transportation Base 90 at around 9.00 am, and the missions will continue in the coming days, depending on the actual situation on the ground.
The air mission is being carried out following a decision issued on July 16 by the National Committee for Emergency Situations.
In firefighting configuration, the C-27J Spartan aircraft can carry 6,000 liters of water (six containers) per pass. Aircraft of this type of the Romanian Air Force have acted since 2017 to date to extinguish several wildfires in Romania in the counties of Mehedinti, Alba, Hunedoara and Buzau.
Also, in previous years, aircraft of this type carried out missions to extinguish wildfires in France, the Republic of Slovenia, Greece and North Macedonia, Defence Ministry representatives also said.
