An exhibition dedicated to celebrating 20 years of promoting Romanian literature abroad through the Translation and Publication Support (TPS) funding programme will open on Thursday at the Main Hall Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR).

According to a press release from ICR sent to AGERPRES on Monday, entitled 'After 20 Years: Romania's Books and Their Journeys', the exhibition, curated by Emil Ivanescu and Simina Filat, highlights both the vital importance of translations and continuity, as well as the diverse openings of the global world in which we live.

'The 20th anniversary of the Translation and Publication Support programme confirms a goal consistently pursued by the Romanian Cultural Institute: that of taking Romanian literature to where it belongs. It is a celebration of the strong partnerships built with publishers around the world, but above all, of the recognition enjoyed by Romanian-language authors on the international stage, alongside valuable translators. We mark this milestone with a series of events in Romania and abroad, reaffirming TPS's role as an essential mechanism for support and promotion, and once again bringing the voices of Romanian literature to the attention of editors and readers worldwide,' said ICR President Liviu Sebastian Jicman, quoted in the press release.

Between the first volume published abroad with the support of ICR through the TPS programme - the Czech edition of "Simion Liftnicul" by Petru Cimpoesu, translated by Jiri Nasinec and published by Dybbuk publishing house in Prague - and the most recent release - the Swedish edition of the novel "Theodoros" by Mircea Cartarescu, translated by Inger Johansson and published by Albert Bonniers Forlag publishing house - hundreds of works by Romanian authors from diverse backgrounds have been promoted in countries where Romanian culture has reached thanks to the power and fascination of books.

From Hungary to Egypt, from Portugal to the United States or Japan, volumes by Romanian writers, published in Albanian, Arabic, Bulgarian, Catalan, Croatian, Czech, Chinese, Korean, Danish, Hebrew, English, Estonian, French, Georgian, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Latvian, Macedonian, Hungarian, Dutch, Norwegian, Polish, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, Ukrainian and Turkish, have travelled more in the past two decades than ever before in history - thanks in large part to the uninterrupted TPS funding programme run by ICR, the press release notes.

The exhibition is the first event in a series marking the 20th anniversary of the Translation and Publication Support (TPS) programme, established by ICR to support the promotion of Romanian literature abroad.

On March 9, the ICR headquarters will host an international conference, and on March 10, the event 'My Love Affair with Literature: Mircea Cartarescu in Dialogue with Marian Ochoa de Eribe' will take place at the Humanitas Cismigiu Bookstore in Bucharest.

Suggested through multiple images, the recent journey of Romania's books around the world will be on display for the public for one month at the ICR headquarters.
