Romanian, detained for 2-million-euro worth of cigarette smuggling attempt

A 40-year-old Romanian was detained by the police after he tried to smuggle into Romania approximately 500,000 packs of cigarettes with a total value of over two million euros, using the lid method, hidden behind boxes of oranges that he was transporting on the Bulgaria-Hungary route, told Agerpres.

"On the night of Wednesday to Thursday, at the Giurgiu Border Crossing Point, a 40-year-old Romanian citizen presented himself at the wheel of a truck to enter the country. According to the documents presented, the driver was transporting oranges on the route to Bulgaria - Hungary. Based on the risk analysis, the Giurgiu border police carried out a thorough control on the means of transport. Thus, in the cargo compartment, 968 boxes containing 484,000 packages with cigarettes of different brands were discovered hidden behind the boxes with oranges, using the lid method," an ITPF Giurgiu release informs on Thursday.

The cigarettes, with a total value of over two million euros, were siezed in order to continue the investigations, and in the case the border police, under the coordination of the Prosecutor's Office near the Giurgiu Court, are conducting investigations.

At the same time, the person in question was detained for 24 hours, to be presented before the court with a proposal for pre-trial arrest.
