Romanian firefighters deployed to Greece intervened to extinguish fires in the area of Palaia Fokaia, working in conditions of reduced visibility, rough terrain, and under the influence of very strong winds that fueled the spread of the flames, the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) announced on Saturday, inform Agerpres.

"As night fell, the personnel and equipment of the RO GFFF-V module continued operating on the ground, carrying out sustained actions to contain and extinguish the fire, protect homes and infrastructure in the southern part of Palaia Fokaia - a coastal town in East Attica, Greece - supply the host country's fire engines with water, and prevent reignitions," informs IGSU.

The crews also conducted continuous monitoring of the affected perimeter, responding promptly in areas with a high risk of fire spread, in order to protect the population and their property.

"Later, as the hours passed, the RO GFFF-V module's forces focused mainly on extinguishing vegetation fires, operating in conditions of reduced visibility, on difficult terrain, and under the influence of strong winds that favored the spread of hot spots. Efforts continued without interruption until dawn, with crews maintaining an active presence in the field to ensure full control and complete extinguishment of the fire," IGSU reports.
