The 40-strong Romanian firefighting module deployed to Greece was positioned at strategic points in order to ensure a fast and efficient response in the event of outbreaks, given the very high risk of forest fires.

"There have been ten days since our team of 40 firefighters, members of the national forest fire taskforce was deployed to Greece. They are pre-positioned in the town of Nea Makri, in the Attica region, approximately 25 km northeast of Athens," the Press Office of the Emergency Management Inspectorate General (IGSU) said.

After the daily operational meeting for outlining the activity schedule for the following period, the commander of the Romanian module participated in the coordination briefing together with the Greek liaison officers. The team attended a theoretical session focused on the operational plan and the flow of information between the local authorities and the Romanian module.

Deployed in the area of the Schinias National Park, the Romanian firefighters conducted practical wildfire suppression drills and carefully monitored the area, being prepared to spring into action if needed.

All their missions are carried out under the direct coordination of the Greek liaison officers and are mainly intended to contain the spread of fires to inhabited areas, as well as to maintain a protection line between the burning front and the unaffected areas.

40 Romanian firefighters and nine pieces of technical equipment participate August 1 - September 15 in the European Union's civil protection efforts in support of the Greek authorities, working alongside response teams from Austria, the Czech Republic, France, the Republic of Moldova and Bulgaria.
