Romania's accession to the Schengen Area with land borders, migration management and border security were the main subjects discussed by Romania's Home Minister Catalin Predoiu and his Hungarian counterpart Sandor Pinter at a videoconference on Monday.

Amid Romania's efforts to finalise the Schengen accession file, Predoiu had a working meeting via videoconference with Pinter.

According to the Romanian Ministry of Home Affairs, the discussions were part of this year's series of meetings of the two dignitaries focused on issues of common interest regarding migration management and border security.

Predoiu thanked Hungary for its constant position and consistency over Romania's accession to the Schengen area.

He pointed out that this is an extremely important moment in terms of the second stage of accession to the Schengen area - the elimination of controls at the internal land borders.

Romania has demonstrated that it secures European borders at a high level, applies all Schengen rules and legislation, uses all European systems, issues Schengen visas and has not recorded any syncope since the elimination of air and sea border controls, on March 31, 2024.

Also highlighted was the particularly advanced level of Romania's readiness for getting operational the future European information system, the Entry/Exit System, and the fact that Romania is a "top standard in the application of the Schengen provisions."

Pinter reconfirmed Hungary's support - including in its capacity as the current holder of the rotating presidency of the European Council - for the completion of Romania's accession process during this year, by facilitating discussions within the Justice and Home Affairs Council.
