The centennial anniversary of the adoption by the Holy Synod of the decision to elevate the Romanian Orthodox Church to the rank of Patriarchate will be marked on Tuesday through a series of liturgical events organized at the Patriarchal Cathedral.
Starting at 7:00 a.m., the holy relics from the Patriarchal Cathedral and those of the Holy Apostle Andrew from the Patriarchal Residence will be carried in procession and then placed under the Canopy of the Saints for pilgrims to worship.
Between 9:00 and 12:00 Patriarch Daniel will celebrate the Holy Liturgy at the Patriarchal Cathedral, together with members of the Holy Synod, of the National Church Assembly, clergy and laity, who are invited to participate in this anniversary liturgical moment.
Starting at noon, Patriarch Daniel will read out the public proclamation of the sainthood of 16 devouts and confessor priests of the 20th century, surrounded by the hierarchs of the Holy Synod.
A Te Deum will be celebrated as of 12:30 at the Patriarchal Cathedral, honoring the Centennial of the Romanian Patriarchate and the beginning of the works of the Holy Synod and the National Church Assembly.
In all places of worship of the Romanian Orthodox Church, a Te Deum will be prayed, with the bells ringing for one minute at the beginning of the service.
The string of events began on Monday at 5:00 p.m., after the conclusion of Vespers, when the last memorial service for the 16 Romanian saints canonized last year by the Holy Synod was celebrated.
According to the Basilica Agency of the Romanian Patriarchate, the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church approved last year the admission to sainthood of 16 pious devouts and confessor priests from the 20th century, who are all pictured in the icon of The Assembly of Romanian Saints, which is the Icon of the Centennial-Commemorative Year 2025.
The new saints have already been included in the 2025 Orthodox Calendar, and approximately one month after the general proclamation, the first remembrance day for one of the group will be celebrated, as the Holy Priest-Martyr Liviu Galaction from Cluj will be honored in all churches on March 8.
The general proclamation of the sainthood of the 16 confessors, held in Bucharest, will be followed by local proclamation ceremonies in the dioceses that submitted the arguments for their canonization.
This year, the Romanian Orthodox Church celebrates 140 years of autocephaly and 100 years since its elevation to the rank of Patriarchate. For this reason, 2025 was declared Centennial Year of the Romanian Patriarchate and Commemorative Year of the Romanian Orthodox Spiritual Fathers and Confessors of the 20th Century.
