The exhibition "Military Saints in Iconographic Representations" will open today at the King Ferdinand I National Military Museum in Bucharest as part of the Romanian Patriarchate Centennial events.
This cultural event, which takes place close to the holy Easter holiday, is the way in which the King Ferdinand I National Military Museum pays homage to the Romanian Patriarchate Centennial, one of the outstanding events of this year, highlighting the close connection that has existed over time between the Church and the Army, according to the Defence Ministry (MApN).
The exhibition is designed bring to the attention of specialists and the public less known special pieces of heritage from the museum's collections, such as "Paintings", "Precious Objects" and "Flags."
The iconographic representations highlight the military past of some well-known saints in the Romanian Christian Orthodox Church, such as Saint George, the protector of the Romanian Army, also called the Bearer of Victory, as well as Saint Mina and Saint Demetrius.
"We hope that through this cultural approach the sacredness of the icons will be harmoniously intertwined with the apparently profane dimension of some museum objects, and the result will be an ambivalent space, as Mircea Eliade described it, a space in which the sacred will help the public to let themselves be enveloped by the special atmosphere of the Easter holidays," MApN says.
The exhibition is open to the public between April 8 and June 2.
