The Plenum of the Chamber of Deputies adopted on Tuesday a draft by which Vasile Lucaciu (1852 - 1922), an activist for rights for Romanians in Transylvania, is declared a "Hero of the Romanian Nation."
There were 232 votes "in favour" and 50 abstentions.
The draft mentions that "to honor the memory of Vasile Lucaciu (1852 - 1922), considered one of the greatest political, cultural and historical personalities of Romanians in Transylvania in the period of the Austro-Hungarian dualism, an activist for the rights of Romanians in Transylvania, and to recognize the efforts he submitted for the accomplishment of the Great Union, he is declared a 'Hero of the Romanian Nation.'"
National Liberal Party (PNL) deputy Calin Ioan Bota stated that in November 29, 2022 is the 100th yearday of Vasile Lucaciu.
"Vasile Lucaciu dedicated his entire life to the fight of Romanians for unity, getting long years in prison for his belief. He fought for unity and was one of its makers. He is a model for us and we should convey this model of a great patriot to future generations," said Bota.
The Save Romania Union deputies abstained from the vote on this draft law.
The draft law was rejected by the Senate, the Chamber of Deputies being the deciding chamber in this case.
