The Romanian Society of Nephrology on Thursday called for early diagnosis and treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD), a condition that affects the lives of approximately 1 in 10 Romanians to remain a priority.

According to statistics, in Romania, only 10% of people with CKD are diagnosed in the early stages.

"The kidneys don't hurt, but CKD can affect you silently. Do your tests, go to the nephrologist and protect your life!", is the appeal that SRN addresses to the general public during this year's campaign.

"Our efforts focus on ensuring an integrated management of chronic kidney disease in line with European standards, at all levels of healthcare, throughout Romania. We support initiatives that facilitate an increase in the number of nephrology specialists and secure equitable territorial coverage. We want to make sure that all regions have the necessary resources for diagnosis and treatment, thus ensuring that no patient is neglected," said Gener Ismail, chairman of the Romanian Society of Nephrology (SRN), on World Kidney Day, which is celebrated annually on the second Thursday of March.

At the same time, the Romanian Society of Nephrology (SNR) is set to strengthen the network of specialised outpatient clinics at national level.

"Chronic kidney disease does not hurt, and that is why many patients remain undiagnosed until treatment options become limited. Since 2023, the Ministry of Health has prioritised changing this reality for almost 2 million Romanians affected by chronic kidney disease, many of them without knowing it. We have given priority to early detection, ensuring the reimbursement of the two essential diagnostic tests, which are performed on the recommendation of family doctors. We encourage all Romanians to monitor their kidney health," Health Minister Alexandru Rafila is quoted as saying in a SNR press release.

According to SNR, the development and implementation of a standardised framework for diagnosis and active monitoring at all levels of healthcare is a priority in optimising the management of chronic kidney disease.
