Romanian troops deployed in Iraq returned home on Saturday, following a decision prompted by recent developments in the regional security situation, the Ministry of National Defence (MApN) said.

"All 117 Romanian troops deployed in the Iraq theatre of operations returned to Romania on Saturday, 21 March, following the decision to adjust NATO's posture within the NATO Mission Iraq. The repatriation was carried out safely, through a coordinated allied effort, with the support of NATO structures and international partners," reads a press release posted on MApN's site.

Romanian troops were temporarily relocated to the Incirlik base in Turkey and the Ramstein base in Germany, from where they were subsequently transported to Romania aboard military aircraft.

"The withdrawal decision was prompted by recent developments in the regional security situation, with priority given to the protection of deployed personnel," the release further mentions.

During their deployment, Romanian troops from the 2nd Calugareni Infantry Battalion were tasked primarily with ensuring the protection of allied personnel and facilities, demonstrating "professionalism and commitment" in carrying out their duties.

The Ministry of National Defence reaffirmed Romania's commitment to NATO operations and missions, stating that the country will continue to contribute to strengthening international security in line with Alliance decisions. A
