The Romanian-Belgian pairing of Irina Begu/Yanina Wickmayer advanced on Monday to the women's doubles quarterfinals of the Roland Garros tennis tournament, the second Grand Slam of the year, after defeating the Russian-Czech duo Kamilla Rakhimova/Anna Siskova 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
34-year-old Begu and 35-year-old Wickmayer who entered the draw as alternates clinched the victory after two hours and 31 minutes against a pair that had ousted in the previous round the third-seeded team Hsieh Su-Wei (Taiwan)/Jelena Ostapenko (Latvia).
Begu and her partner secured a check for 80,000 euros and 430 WTA doubles points.
In the quarterfinals, Begu and Wickmayer will play Ulrikke Eikeri (Norway)/Eri Hozumi (Japan).
