Romanian tennis player Elena Ruxandra Bertea on Thursday reached the women's singles quarterfinals of the ITF W50 Trnava tournament in Slovakia, prize money USD 40,000, after defeating Serbian Mia Ristic 6-2 7-5.
It took Bertea, 19, ranked 313th, who last weekend made her debut in Romania's Billie Jean King Cup team, almost two hours to get the victory, managing 11 aces.
Bertea is now 2-1 in the head-to-head count against Ristic, 19, ranked 275th after the Serbian won 6-3 1-6 6-1 in August in the quarterfinals in Brasov (W35), and Bertea won in October in Bucharest (W75), 7-5 7-5, also in the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, Bertea will face Czech qualifier Lucie Havlickova, 20, ranked 398th.
