Romania's Bulgaru advances to Queretaro Open singles QFs

Romanian tennis player Miriam Bulgaru on Wednesday progressed to the women's singles quarterfinals at the Queretaro Open WTA 125 tournament in Queretaro, Mexico, prize money USD115,000, after defeating Slovakian Martina Okalova, 7-6 (7/5) 6-3.

Fifth seed Bulgaru, 27, ranked 232nd, prevailed in an hour and 47 minutes.

Okalova, 28, ranked 406th, who led 2-0 in the first set, committed 12 double faults in this match, twice as many as the Romanian.

For her performance so far, Bulgaru won USD 3,450 and 27 WTA singles points. In the quarterfinals she will play American Katrina Scott, 21, ranked 461st, in their first meet.

Compatriot Gabriela Lee, 30, ranked 239th, (30 years old, 293 WTA), called up to the Romanian team for the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers, will play on Thursday in the round of 16 against top seed, the Czech Sara Bejlek, 19, ranked 101st, another first-time meet.
