Romania's coal production amounted to 629,600 tonnes of oil equivalent (toe) in the first four months of 2025, down 0.7% (minus 4,500 toe) compared to the same period last year, according to data compiled by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
Coal imports during the mentioned period were 31,500 toe, down 31,900 toe (minus 50.3%) compared to January-April 2024.
Coal production dynamic, as well as imports are expected to decline until 2027, as other energy production capacities become operational, with a decrease of 11.4% and 24.5% respectively, according to estimates in the latest Energy Balance Forecast published by the National Commission for Strategy and Prognosis (CNSP).
Thus, coal production is estimated at 1.718 million toe (down 10.5%) in 2025, 1.555 million toe (down 9.5%) in 2026 and 1.432 million toe (down 7.9%) in 2027.
Imports are expected to decline in 2025 by 20.5% to 164,000 toe, in 2026 by 26.3% to 121,000 toe, and in 2027 by 34.4% to 79,000 toe. AGERPRES
