Romanian athletes Daria Asaftei, Darius Coman and Denis Popescu qualified on Thursday for the finals at the European Aquatics Short Course Swimming Championships in Lublin, Poland.
In the women's 200 m breaststroke, Daria Asaftei broke the national record twice, first in the heats with the third fastest time (2 min 21 sec 50/100), then in the semifinals with the sixth fastest time (2 min 20 sec 14/100). The final event will take place on Friday evening (20:12).
Darius Coman posted the fifth fastest time in the men's 200 m breaststroke - heats (2 min 05 sec 12/100) and was fifth again in the semifinals with 2 min 03 sec 85/100, a new national record. The final event will take place on Friday evening (20:19).
In the men's 100 m backstroke, Denis Popescu qualified for Friday's final (20:06) with the third fastest time in the semifinals, 49 sec 99/100. Popescu had ranked 13th in the heats with 50 sec 89/100. Tudor Iordache recorded the 22nd time in the heats, 51 sec 76/100 (a national record for age 17).
Romania is competing with eight swimmers at the short-course European Aquatics Championships in Lublin from 2 to 7 December: Denis Popescu (50 m, 100 m backstroke, 50 m butterfly), Andrei Proca (400 m, 800 m, 1,500 m freestyle), Danis Volintir (50 m, 100 m breaststroke), Tudor Iordache (50 m, 100 m, 200 m backstroke), Patrick Dinu (50 m, 100 m, 200 m freestyle), Darius Coman (200 m breaststroke, 200 m, 400 m medley), Eric Andries (100 m, 200 m, 400 m freestyle), Daria Asaftei (50 m, 100 m, 200 m breaststroke), accompanied by coaches Viorel Ciobanu, Gabriel Cojocaru, Razvan Florea and Bogdan Stroe.
