Romania's gross domestic product fell by 0.2% in real terms in the third quarter of this year compared with the previous quarter, after advancing by 1% in Q2 versus Q1, according to the flash estimates published on Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
Compared with the same quarter of 2024, GDP increased by 1.6% on the unadjusted series and by 1.4% on the seasonally adjusted series, agerpres reports.
In the January-September 2025 period, the economy grew by 0.8% compared with the same period last year on the unadjusted series, and by 1.4% on the seasonally adjusted series.
"As a result of the revision of the unadjusted series by including the GDP estimate for the third quarter of 2025 in the quarterly series, the seasonally adjusted series has been recalculated. The volume indices have been revised compared with the second provisional version of the GDP for the second quarter of 2025, published in press release No. 259 of 10 November 2025, as follows: the results for Q1 2024 compared with Q4 2023 were not revised (100.0%); the results for Q2 2024 compared with Q1 2024 were not revised (99.6); the results for Q3 2024 compared with Q2 2024 were revised from 100.4% to 100.6%; the results for Q4 2024 compared with Q3 2024 were revised from 100.6% to 100.5%; the results for Q1 2025 compared with Q4 2024 were revised from 100.0% to 100.1; the results for Q2 2025 compared with Q1 2025 were revised from 101.2% to 101.0%. Seasonally adjusted series are recalculated quarterly in line with European practice," the INS noted.
The International Monetary Fund forecasts that Romania's economy will grow by 1% in 2025 and by 1.4% in 2026, in both cases downward revisions from the spring estimates of 1.6% and 2.8% respectively. Meanwhile, the World Bank's latest economic outlook for Europe and Central Asia shows that the Romanian economy is expected to expand by only 0.4% this year and by 1.3% next year.
In Bucharest, the latest projections of the National Commission for Strategy and Prognosis point to GDP growth of 0.6% this year and 1.2% in 2026.
