Romania's Jianu scores first ATP victory at Tiriac Open

Romanian tennis player Filip Cristian Jianu achieved his first ATP victory, 6-3 6-4 against American Nishesh Basavareddy, on Monday, in the first round of the Tiriac Open ATP 250 tournament, prize money EUR 596,035, hosted by the National Tennis Centre in Bucharest.

Wild card Jianu, 23, world number 241, prevailed in an hour and 33 minutes over a much better ranked opponent, Basavareddy, 19, world number 108.

The American was the better in direct winners, 23-15, but made more unforced errors 30-15.

The highest-ranked Romanian in singles won EUR 10,460 and 25 ATP singles points, and in the round of 16 he will face the winner between Monegasque Valentin Vacherot and Bosnian Damir Dzumhur.

In another first-round match, Romanian Luca Preda, 18, world number 1,081, lost to Vacherot, 26, world number 259 ATP, 6-2 6-3.

Preda is thus left with EUR 3,200 and 7 ATP singles points.
