Romania's resident population decreased by 24,400 people to 19.043 million on January 1, 2025, while the international migration balance was on a positive trend, of plus 71,300 people, according to data withthe National Institute of Statistics (INS) published on Wednesday.

"The main cause of the decrease: negative natural growth (difference between the number of live births and deaths: -100.9 thousand people); the balance of positive international migration: +71.3 thousand people, but insufficient to compensate for the natural decrease," according to INS.

As of January 1, 2025, the resident population in urban areas was 9.770 million people, down 1.3% year-on-year. At the same time, the female population was almost 9.753 million, down 0.4% year-on-year.

INS data reveal that population aging has deepened, with the share of the elderly population (aged 65 and over) continuing the growth trend. As against January 1, 2024, the advance was 0.3%(from 20% in 2024 to 20.3% on January 1, 2025).

Also, the share of the population aged 0-14 years in the total population decreased from 15.9% on 1 January 2024 to 15.4% on 1 January 2025, with the demographic ageing index increasing from 125.8 (on 1 January 2024) to 131.3 elderly people per 100 young people (on 1 January 2025).

According to INS, the demographic dependency ratio decreased slightly from 56.1 young and elderly people per 100 adults on January 1, 2024, to 55.6 on the same date last year.

At the same time, the international migration balance in 2024 was positive, with the number of immigrants exceeding that of emigrants by 71,300. Romania continued to be an immigration country, as the balance of international migration decreasing from the previous years failed to compensate for the negative natural growth (-100,900 people).

In 2024, men were the majority among both emigrants (53.3%) and immigrants (64.5%).
