Romania's deposit-refund system (DRS) RetuRO is an example of good practices at the moment at European level and the largest globally integrated deposit-refund system, Anca Marinescu, Corporate Affairs and Communication Manager, RetuRO SGR, said on Thursday at a specialist debate.
"The Romanian deposit-refund system is an example of good practices at the moment at European level. It is the largest globally integrates DRS . We are the only ones who have everyone at the table included in this system. We are the second largest European system. We will probably be the third starting next year, because Poland has also entered," said the RetuRO SGR representative.
According to her, Romania manages to collect "impressive quantities" monthly and recycle equally impressive quantities every month.
"The material is of good quality and can be returned in new packaging, which is the basis of this deposit-refund system. That is what was wanted when it was designed by the beverage manufacturers. The fact that in the last two months, August and September, the collection rate under the DRS was over 90% shows that Romanians collect and return packaging. That is a reality! It is the desire to recover your deposit and then the accessibility of the system. It is easy to use; you can find such machines at all the major retailers."
Marinescu added that the management of the system and the investments over the last two years were made on a green loan that RetuRO, the system administrator, took out quite difficult. Although we have, as shareholders, large multinational companies, in the area of soft drinks, as well as beer, it took almost seven months to get the loan because no bank understood, from the beginning, what this system is and did not want to finance the initiative. It was quite difficult to get that money, over EUR 80 million that helped us operate," said the representative of RetuRO SGR.
