The Parliament must be convened in an extraordinary session to correct the Ordinance that changes the Road Traffic Code, Save Romania Union (USR) said on Monday in a press release, at the same time arguing that the Minister of the Interior, Catalin Predoiu, must "let someone who knows how to fight drugs" do this job.

"USR demands the urgent dismissal of the Minister of the Interior, Catalin Predoiu, and the convening of the Parliament in an extraordinary session to correct Emergency Ordinance 84/2024, which treats as 'drugged' the drivers who have consumed common medicines such as Paracetamol Parasinus, Nurofen or are under treatment for diabetes. Before issuing an abusive and unconstitutional ordinance, Predoiu should have thought about how it would be applied. It is the responsibility of the Ciolacu Cabinet to make the purchase of devices for the processing of the tests and the employment of related staff," the press release states.

USR deputy Emanuel Ungureanu recalled that, since last November, he drew attention to the fact that "thousands of tests carried out with the Police's Drugtest machines are false positives and honest people are treated as criminals by the Romanian state, they remain without driving licenses and criminal files are abusively drawn up against them". "Ciolacu does not take responsibility for Predoiu's catastrophic decisions and promises resources to increase the capacity to process tests, only that the 'Nurofen addicts ordinance' is already producing effects," Ungureanu pointed out.

USR Senator Simona Spataru, chair of the Committee for Constitutionality, stated that "Minister Catalin Predoiu has failed in the fight against drugs and, because he cannot stand up to traffickers and dealers, he is now at war with drivers who may have the misfortune of inconclusive tests".

Simona Spataru requested that the Ombudsman challenge this ordinance to the Constitutional Court.
