Education Minister Daniel David said on Thursday that the student scholarship fund will decrease compared to 2023 and 2024, and students will receive scholarships as long as they are in school, not during vacation.
"If we go to the area of student scholarships, the 2023 law created these extraordinary facilities. Of course, I think it was a good intention, but it is not one that we can carry out, a sustainable one. In 2023, the reporting point for student scholarships was the gross minimum salary per economy. What we propose as a reference point is the net minimum salary per economy, for a rational reason: scholarships are not taxed and then you report to the net minimum salary per economy and at the same time in the area of students, being adults, we will give them scholarships as long as they are at school, not during vacations, that is, during educational activities. Obviously, the scholarship fund decreases compared to 2023, but I tell you that almost nothing from a financial point of view can be compared to the crisis situation that we are in," David said in a press conference at Victoria Palace.
He added that although this fund decreases compared to 2024 or 2023, it is larger than the one in 2022, before those changes were made.
"I will discuss closely with the students to see what other facilities for them we can find as a result of these changes. And I see this change as a temporary one, for a study cycle, namely for a three-year study cycle," said Daniel David.
