Leader of the National Liberal Party (PNL) and Senate President Nicolae Ciuca declared on Tuesday that the government needs to handle the budget deficit in such a way that the increase in collections aligns with the decrease in expenditures.

Asked in a talk show on broadcaster Digi 24 what is to be expected of taxes and dues in 2025, given that the government needs additional revenues, Ciuca replied: "People have this fear about the widening of the deficit. We see that the year-end estimate places the deficit close to 6.8 - 6.9 and we cannot carry it forward, first of all because we have to be aware that we must reduce it to 3 percent. There is a correlation between the very large deficit, the public debt and the increase in the loan interests we have to pay. Therefore, the government must act in such a way through the measures we take, that all these elements get on a downward trend."

He also emphasized that current data shows that budget tax collections have increased, but measures to cut budget expenses must still be envisaged.

"The finance minister said this very clearly, that revenue collection is currently 17 percent higher compared to last year, (...) but this it is not enough because budget expenses have increased too. It's not easy at all, everything has to be managed to the last penny, otherwise it doesn't work. (...) All this needs to be handled in such a way that the increase in collections aligns with the decrease in budget expenses, and it is absolutely necessary for the government to take action so as to reduce budget expenses, otherwise we cannot manage the budgetary fiscal balance and also everything VAT recovery, because we are running a VAT gap of RON 35 billion. Certain measures were proposed. You are well aware of the discussions about the e-VAT measure, it should have been discussed in before with the business environment," Nicolae Ciuca said.
