The visit to Romania of a US congressional delegation represents a message of "strategic partnership" between the two countries, declared Senate Vice President Robert Cazanciuc on Monday, arguing that the United States has "always" relied in Europe "on two strategic pillars - Poland and Romania."

"I will also participate in this meeting tomorrow, it's a mixed delegation of Republicans and Democrats," Canzaciuc said, stressing that all his meetings in the US with Congress and Senate representatives were bipartisan, and that the Romanian authorities have always sought to maintain this balance. "It is a message, after all, of strategic partnership between Romania and the United States. There are two pillars in Europe the United States has always relied upon - one in the north, which is called Poland, and one in the south, which is called Romania," said the Social-Democrat senator, at the Palace of Parliament.

According to Cazanciuc, the American delegation is "very welcome" to Romania, which has a "fairly" solid partnership with the US and, despite the "perhaps more impetuous" approaches on the part of the Trump administration, these cannot affect the "special" relationship of the two countries.

"I hope they will also go visit the Kogalniceanu base, I hope they will also see other facilities Romania has, where we mainly use American defense hardware. It is a fairly solid partnership, I think, and what is happening now can be a chance for us to understand those who, perhaps, do not know exactly what our place and role within the Alliance is and this situation where we have a conflict on Romania's border," the PSD senator pointed out.

Liberal floor leader, Senator Daniel Fenechiu emphasized the "very good" relations of Romanian lawmakers with American congressmen.

"The world summarizes Romanian-American relations strictly to having access to Trump. This is incorrect. Many Romanian lawmakers have very good relations with US congressmen, there are bilateral relations, there are friendly relations. I believe that, ultimately, Romanian-American relations are on an upward trend, discussions will tackle aspects that interest them in principle. We will all lobby in the sense that Romania is a democratic state and that the decisions of the Constitutional Court are respected. They will probably have curiosities to inquire about, we will offer clarifications and a better position of Romania in the area will definitely emerge from this," Fenechiu said.

A delegation of eight members of the US Congress - Democrats and Republicans - led by Republican Vern Buchanan arrives in Bucharest on Monday evening. The US delegation has meetings scheduled on Tuesday with acting President Ilie Bolojan, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, and Romanian lawmakers.
