Senate's Ciuca: Romania is well known for living in peace with all ethnic groups

The PNL (National Liberal Party) leader, and Senate's President, Nicolae Ciuca emphasized at the Congress of the Representatives of the Roma Communities of Sunday that Romania is well known for having managed to live in good understanding with all its ethnic communities.

The PSD (Social Democratic Party) leader, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, the UDMR (Democratic Union of Hungarians of Romania) leader, Kelemen Hunor, the interim Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Alfred Simonis, and other politicians also participated in the event organized on Sunday at the Palace Hall in Bucharest.

"We are all present here today, all the leaders of political parties, to show that we care and want to do good, so that all the things that were emphasized by President Nicolae Paun [the problems facing the Roma community - editor's note] become priorities on the work agenda of the political parties, on the work agenda of the Parliament, on the agenda of the Government, of the entire civil society, so that we no longer discuss, as is the case with the Roma communities, that one Roma out of 4 does not have running water of home, one Roma out of 10 does not have access to electricity or one Roma child out of three does not have anything to eat at night, before going to bed. That means we care and that means we are a united society. You are the the second largest community in Romania, according to both official data and unofficial data. You are not only a large community, but also one with a history of hundreds of years in Romania. Romania is a country that it is well known for succeeding to leave peacefully, in good understanding, in acceptance, with all its communities, with all ethnicities, without making that difference of religion, of ethnicity," said Ciuca.

He mentioned that in our country there are Hungarians, Roma, Czechs, Slovaks, Armenians, Jews living together, and this is the importance of the example our country sets in a European Union whose motto is "United in diversity."

"To be united in diversity means to learn from each other, to be able to use the virtues, values, traditions, culture of each ethnic community, so that the nation can be more united than ever, and today, in the context that we all feel and we see it, our country needs more than ever to stay united, it needs balanced people to be able to express their point of view and act so that we all live in peace, we all live in unity. It is mandatory to make those decisions to ensure economic and social inclusion, to do so in such a way as to increase access to health, to increase access to education and to ensure educational opportunities for every child in Romania, regardless of ethnicity," mentioned Ciuca.
