This is a complicated period for Romania, of reconstruction, with not very popular reforms, and the intention is to regain the trust, first of all, of Romanians inside and outside the country, then of foreign partners, financial institutions and the European Commission, Senate Chairman Mircea Abrudean said on Thursday.
He added that Romanians abroad represent Romania better than any ambassador, president or other person with a position in the country, saying that he wants them to return home.
"I would like to convey to you the message of Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan who, unfortunately, could not be present today with you, but he sends you a message of respect and appreciation, because this is a complicated period for Romania, a period of rebuilding the country, after all, with many reforms, not very popular, but someone has to do them. Our intention is precisely to regain the trust, first, of the Romanians inside and outside the country, then, of course, of our foreign partners, of the financial institutions, of the European Commission, of all those who support us. And, through what the government is doing at the moment, with Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and with all the people who support these steps, this is what we are trying to do and we hope to succeed, precisely so that we can give you a message of confidence and hope, because we really need something like this," Abrudean said at the opening of the 10th edition of RePatriot Summit, - "Top 100 Romanians Everywhere" Gala.
He added that he sends a message of hope.
"I wanted to be present here to have such a message in a complicated situation, because things do not look very good for Romania, neither in the country nor abroad - a large deficit, with inflation, with all the figures you see thrown every day into the public space. You should know that there is a hope, an important hope for us, apart from the reforms and political stability that exists and which is very beneficial for the country, we have an important country project that will certainly help us to bring back at least some of you: we are talking about Romania's accession to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. It is the most important country project, after NATO and the European Union. The OECD means for us external confidence, it means more investment, it means a more efficient administration and maybe we should talk more about this."
He said that, in the last three consecutive years, more Romanians have settled in Romania than left.
"And we had 190,000 Romanians who returned to the country in 2023. Of course, I think the figures are due to this extraordinary project, RePatriot - many congratulations and a lot of respect for what it does," Abrudean added.
At the same time, he congratulated the citizens of the Republic of Moldova on the result of their parliamentary election and for maintaining the pro-European direction.
Abrudean added that Romanians abroad represent the country with "dedication and professionalism."
"I would like to congratulate you all on what you do for Romania, on the way you represent us better than any ambassador, better than any president, better than any other person holding an office in this country. Through everything you do, through your dedication, through your professionalism, through the way you behave outside the country, you make us proud, you create an extraordinary image of Romania. Of course, we still have exceptions, but that's life. I really want you to stay close to Romania, you will certainly do it because you are here and you have put your shoulder to everything that Romania means today. And of course, I want you to return home even more, when Romania will be ready to receive you. And I think that we are taking important steps in this direction, with everything that is happening now. We are waiting for you, because Romania needs you here at home perhaps more than ever,"Abrudean concluded.
